CEE 568 - Water and Sanitation Design and Practice

This course introduces students to the principles and design approaches for water and sanitation services that do not rely upon fully centralized systems.  Content includes: source water options and protection; household water treatment; water storage; faecal sludge management; ecosanitation and resource-oriented sanitation; pit latrines and toilets.  Risk analysis methods will be introduced and incorporated into the design planning process. Students will be introduced to the principles of community engagement and risk communication. The course material will focus on applications in low-, middle- and high-income countries with an eye toward achieving resource efficiency and risk reduction. Issues pertaining to equity around access to WASH services will be integrated throughout the class.
